In 1896, more than 40,000 people traveled to a temporary town in Texas to watch two steam locomotives deliberately crash into each other.
The railroad built a carnival around it—games, lemonade stands, speeches, tents, and a Ferris wheel. Then the boilers exploded.
Flying metal tore into the crowd, killing three people and seriously injuring at least six. By nightfall, the town of Crush had vanished. Spectators carried pieces of the wreckage home as souvenirs.
Apparently, even catastrophe needs merchandise.
